Mules Operation Blowfly Prevention Outlined by Bir TLD Chester
The Mules operation for preventing blowfly strike in sheep was outlined by Bir. TLD, a government veterinary surgeon, at the School of Instruction. A demonstration showed removal of wrinkled skin from the crutch region and the guided practice by experts. Data from trials through 1928/29 and 1520/20 are cited to compare wrinkle severity and strike rates among A B C classes, with A class generally worse. Breeding toward plain breech sheep and selective use of plain breech rams were recommended to reduce wrinkling and jetting, alongside careful crutching, jetting, and tool maintenance.
