Sheep Ked Seasonal Decline Study Findings

A Council for Scientific and Industrial Research study on sheep ked life history outlines a 27 day hatch after deposition, sexual maturity at five to six days for females and 10 to 11 days for males, 7 day gestation, and first pupae after at least 15 days if mated. Males live about 4 days and females about 100 on sheep, with poor condition and younger sheep more susceptible. Seasonal decline in ked population observed during warmer months.

Sheep Nasal Fly Threat To Lambs In Spring Or Summer

A rural report describes the sheep nasal fly, prevalent in warm months, laying maggots at sheep nostrils, causing pus heavy irritation. Animals rub noses on wool or soil to ease heat and maggots crawl into the nostrils, creating a foul discharge. Prevention includes regular tar applications with Stockholm tar from October through January.

Merino Stud Breeders Change Embargo Policy in Queensland

By 21 votes to 15 the Queensland Merino Stud Sheepbreeders Association changed its policy on the export embargo. A ballot of 33 members showed 71 in favor and 15 against lifting the embargo as outdated. Attendees included B Carter Talbalbs Cunnamulla Crom Goonars Hodel Clemont Wel rassted Bisckal K B Cameron fullamon Plains and Steel Rule Bollen. A letter from the Selectors Association urged testing fertility before selling rams, to be considered at the next general meeting. Artificial insemination will be discussed at the forthcoming annual meeting. Mr Crombie, about to join the ALF, received best wishes. Miss Gordon, acting secretary, address Victoria Dewna Morven.
