Indonesia refuses to recognise the new federation formed by Malaya Singapore British North Borneo and Sarawak. President Soekarno and top officials announced the stance after a two hour Jakarta meeting.
The Malay Federation, now named Malaysia, is proclaimed by Tunku Abdul Rahman amid global reactions.Indonesia recalls its ambassador and calls Malaysia illegal while Malaya recalls families from Indonesia. Djakarta troops guard embassy homes as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore begin four days of celebrations.
Malaysian and British embassies remain under armed guard with battle police in Jakarta after youth protests targeted the Malaysian and British missions. An organizer reported plan for Tunku Abdul Rahman to resign, a move political observers view as strategic rather than retirement.
