The Commonwealth Government declares Australia will stand behind Britain in any action she takes during the present crisis. This commitment means Australia would go to any lengths Britain is prepared to adopt in the event of war.
Riots and bloodshed amid Sudeten unrest intensify. Seventeen dead include five Germans and two Czechs. Sudeten storm troopers seize Marienbad frontier, authorities clash with rioters, and calls for plebiscite intensify. Czech government rejects ultimatum and a conference is proposed.
Berlin daily reports utmost nerve in business circles as the regime faces strain. The piece notes loss of Gearing’s moderating influence and fears over Sudeten minorities and the government’s ability to control events. It also cites destruction in Eger and praises Czech trade unionists who resisted Henleinists.
Tokyo reports the Foreign Office says Japan is prepared to join Germany to oppose the Reds under the anti Comintern pact. It urges Britain and France to see Comintern intrigue as the cause of European crisis and praises Hitler's speech as a push to resolve the Sudeten issue. They report violence against Sudeten Germans and demand four conditions including withdrawal of martial law and police, gendarmerie limits, and normal duties for state services within six hours or they will not assume responsibility.
Geneva reports a tense war atmosphere as Britain and allied nations loom in European crisis talk. NZ and Australia deny opposing Britain policy while Ottawa says Canada has not been asked to commit. Delegations warned to prepare for possible return home amid mounting tension.
Markets failed to sustain early gains as fear over Herr Hitler's actions dampened sentiment. Business was largely at a standstill with gilt edged securities weakening due to foreign selling. Industrials generally declined, with some substantial drops.
Reports from New York Paris London show heavy trading as markets fall sharply. Prices slide up to ten dollars a share in New York while wheat gains surge. Paris and London cut gains after Hitler speech as Sydney Melbourne share prices weaken on European tensions.
