A railway worker Neil J Salman 22 of Brisbane was killed when his truck crashed into stationary lorries during shunting near Melbourne. Henry Alan McGowan 34 from Boronia died when a crane wheel crushed him while directing removal of heavy angle iron at a factory in Mount Waverley.
The government is considering giving financial aid to church homes for children. Minister Hawkins said a special committee investigated the plight of these homes and one report is under review for action.
Prime Minister Mr Monzies announced the appointment of PD Phillips QC of Melbourne as chairman of the Commonwealth Grants Commission for a three year term starting October 1. He succeeds Sir Alexander Fitzgerald whose appointment is extended for three years. Also named as member is Professor Wilfred Prost of Melbourne. Aimed at advising on special grants to Western Australia and Tasmania.
