Tornadoes spawned by Carla hit floodbound Galveston early today striking a courthouse crowded with refugees and a ten block row of homes. Officials counted about 50 injuries from flying glass as windows shattered while Carla weakened yet still reached toward Austin with winds near 100 mph.
The hurricane Carla caused two confirmed deaths and widespread damage across Texas and Louisiana. Evacuations reached about 400,000 in Texas. Victoria endured hours of pounding as the eye passed nearby. Damage estimates run into hundreds of millions with port areas like Corpus Christi and Port Aransas hit hard. tornadoes and looting concerns accompanied the storm as officials mobilized National Guard units.
The Government expects to sell 450 houses to tenants in Canberra this year, a higher figure than last year.
