U S officials debate air and sea actions amid Quemoy and Matsu tensions. Dulles signals possible concessions to Communist China if it renounces force in the Formosa Straits, while warnings of naval engagement and ambassadorial talks unfold.
Rep John Herman opined in a radio interview that President Eisenhower should press Chiang Kai-shek to pull Nationalist forces from the Quemoy and Matsu islands. He warned against risking U.S. prestige and a potential war with China by withholding troops.
The Italian Foreign Affairs Minister Casey refused to comment on a London report that he persuaded Indonesia to refrain from arms purchases. Indonesian officials in Djakarta denied the claim while a London Times correspondent said the report could be a trial kite by opponents. Prime Minister Menzies would neither confirm nor deny Casey’s discussions with Indonesia and said he expected further talks to occur in Washington within 24 hours.
Sir Philip McBride told the House of Representatives that Australia's defence policy remains built on collective security with allies and readiness to expand in emergencies. He noted continued emphasis on regular forces, research in guided weapons, and expansion of forces from 57,500 to 113,000 since 1950. The government will modify roles and equipment as needed to meet new situations.
In Anchorage, an Air Force twin engine transport crashed after take off on a routine courier mission to remote Alaska outposts. Witnesses reported the plane yawed to the right and plunged about 800 feet before bursting into flames, killing twelve of the 17 aboard.
Cabinet overruled the Broadcasting Control Board to grant two commercial TV licences in each city. The board had urged one licence per city and a fresh inquiry, plus local capital rules. The Postmaster General was told to announce two licence-holders from the present applicants with majority local ownership. Davidson to speak in the House today.
Prime Minister Mr Mensaies stated Australia would not be automatically committed if hostilities broke out in Formosa. He said obligations under ANZUS do not extend there and that America has definite responsibilities with Nationalist China. He linked current tensions to a pattern from past decades and noted moves from Quemoy and Matsu to the Suez area, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon.
A 47 year old woman was charged with murder at the City Watch house after the death of Albert Alfred Solomon a well known Melbourne bookmaker from Rye. He was found slumped in a chair with a deep knife wound in his stomach.
