President Ford's decision to pardon former President Nixon for offenses while in office provokes sharp Senate and public backlash. Critics call it premature and fear it shields Nixon from prosecution, while supporters say it preserves national stability.
A public meeting at Sydney Town Hall to back secret union ballots was abandoned after fights among organizers demonstrators and police. Extra police were called as audience members stormed the rostrum. About 300 people attended the Lower Town Hall event. Campaign speakers were booed and jeered by about 40 demonstrators before council officials closed the meeting.
Lady Kerr wife of the Governor General died early yesterday in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney aged. A private family service was held at St James Church Sydney and at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium chapel yesterday afternoon. A memorial service will be held at St James’s on Thursday at 9 30am. Lady Kerr is survived by Sir John Kerr two married daughters and a son. Mr Smith said that about Exster this year she was found to be suffering from a serious illness which could not be treated. She returned to Admiralty House then hospital, deterioration made further treatment impossible. The Prime Minister called it a cruel blow as Sir John mourns. Lady Kerr devoted mother and social worker.
The ACT Advisory Council resolved to withdraw all revaluation notices in the Kingston Griffith redevelopment area and issue new valuations excluding redevelopment potential. It urged the Minister for the Capital Territory to amend ordinances so residential valuations omit redevelopment components, benefiting about 270 leaseholders immediately and future leaseholders in similar areas. The vote had one abstention from Labor’s Mr Walsh.
The council held its final meeting last night after 44 years, far longer than its original one year intent. Elected in 1930, it aimed to exist until self government for the ACT was established. It steps down as the ACT Legislative Assembly is due to be elected on September 28, marking a major move toward self government promised in 1931.
NSW Minister Healey said Queanbeyan City Council would pay 25000 for approved flood-relief works with the State Government covering further costs. The council seeks 106000 in repairs while private claims go separately. He plans to table the report before the NSW Cabinet and Flood Relief Committee.
Deputy Prime Minister Dr Cairns warned Canberra that Government steps to curb inflation would cause unemployment. He urged recognition of the hardship and backed Cabinet plans to revive unemployment relief funds for locally run, labour intensive community projects, especially in rural areas with high unemployment.

SYDNEY notes reported conflicting views from unions and government officials.

A Canberra Jaycees survey of 725 people indicates a near split on introducing poker machines in the ACT. 52.3 percent favoured, 5.1 percent undecided. referendum support 67.8 percent with 1 percent undecided. Among 342 club members 58.4 percent favoured, 383 non members 33.9 percent, ACE members 33.8 percent, NSW club members 67.3 percent, and dual ACT NSW club members 53.7 percent in favour. The spokesman said the survey aims to gauge public feeling with a cross‑sectional sample drawn with a statistician’s help.
Former Labor MP Allan Fraser, now an independent candidate for the ACT Legislative Assembly on September 28, says he is not in dispute with Labor. He notes long Labor affiliation since 1926 and that Labor gave him and McCauley immediate preferences, while he intends to vote independently on local issues and policies. ALP Canberra head Terry Higgins says Fraser’s stance should prompt voting for the Labor team, and notes party rules on nominating against endorsed candidates.
