At Port Elizabeth the fourth rugby union Test erupted into the year's worst race clash as thousands of mixed blood and black Africans rioted. Police fired shots in the air and clashed with both sides while play was halted for about four minutes.
In a 22 6 loss the Wallabies faced a stadium riot as non whites clashed with police after a South African try. Bottles and stones fly as hundreds flee enclosures while players fear for safety. About 50 cars were damaged and police fired into the air.
In Kasane Bechuanaland South African refugees Arthur Goldbreich and Harold Wolpe boarded a small Agno plane bound for Katanga. They were escorted by police from Francistown to Palapye before the flight, labeled as major figures in South African politics. The Day Law allows 90 day police holds without charges.

The other passenger, Frederick Frank of Currong Flats Braddon, was admitted with severe head lacerations.
The 2400 ton Union Steamship Karoo ran aground Corsair Reef near Port Phillip Heads about 8 pm yesterday. It broke free after midnight and headed for Queenscliff Beach under its own steam. Tugs and volunteers rushed to assist as engineers halted near the reef with the bow damaged and hold flooded.
Police said a break in occurred at the Deakin Hopetoun Circuit pre school centre during the weekend through a broken window. No theft amount or items were confirmed as stolen as yet.
