The Minister for the Interior Mr Freeth announced that 463 residential leases would be auctioned on October 23 and 24. New conditions for block auctions would be introduced and an amendment to the City Area Leases Ordinance would apply to this sale.
Mr Freeth outlined 288 blocks to be offered in eight groups next month with leases beginning at various dates over 1964. Forty eight and twenty four block groups provide staged starts, while single blocks go to open auction. Several suburbs including Watson Downer Hackett Hughes Curtin feature in the plan with covenants and rents specified.
An 80 aboard Swiss Air Caravelle perished when the jet caught fire and crashed near Duerrenasch in the Lake District after taking off from Zurich bound for Rome via Geneva. Eyewitnesses described a violent breakup, wreckage igniting farmhouses, and a long search for passenger identities due to no available list.
The Minister for the Interior Mr Freeth announced amendments to the City Area Leases Ordinance restricting dummying at restricted land auctions. A 16 year old girl in Bangkok burned herself with petrol on a mosquito net after her parents scolded her for going to the wrong market. She died five hours later in hospital.
Lake Burley Griffin will start filling on September 20. Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies will close the valves at 10.30 a.m. to initiate filling, which should finish early next year. National Capital Development Commissioner J. W. Overall said the process would take about three to four months, weather permitting, with an inspection of the dam by the public on Saturday September 21.
John Francis Bryant 63, a retired journalist from Hazelbrook, died shielding his nine year old granddaughter Annette Chirgwin as a pine tree toppled in Megalong Valley. Annette suffered a broken collarbone possibly rib fractures. bystanders freed Bryant with a car jack.
Princess Alexandra of Greece was taken off the danger list at a Venice hospital after an overdose of drugs. The hospital director said she would be able to leave within a few days.
