Aid pours in for Iran after a massive earthquake with unofficial death estimates around 20,000. A European wide airlift is under way, led by 41 U.S. Hercules aircraft joining the operation.
Western Trans rescue teams toil in extreme heat to free and recover victims after a massive quake in Tran region. In Teheran US diplomat apologizes for a misleading TV broadcast that spurred fleeing residents. a police source allegedly warned of further danger. By noon, 1,092 bodies were recovered in Daresfahan with thousands dead across 8,000 square miles.
The Government announced a £25 000 donation for Iran earthquake relief. Minister Sir Garfield Barwick said he sent a sympathy message to Iran’s Foreign Affairs Minister Abbas Aram and expressed distress over the devastation and heavy loss. He asked that the government’s sympathy be extended to victims’ families.
Australian Prime Minister Menzies warned the forthcoming Commonwealth conference on the Common Market could be the first of several. He declined to reveal details to about 40 pressmen in London and said Britain would decide its own course, while Australia aims to protect the Commonwealth trade pattern. Australian Trade Minister McEwen noted no firm results on Britain’s negotiations complicating firm attitudes.
