Perth based Cliffs Western Australian Mining says it has made an offer to sell Robe River iron ore and ore pellets to Japan. If accepted the deal would exceed $1,000 million, signaling a major potential export agreement.
Three people died in Canberra weekend road crashes. A passenger died after a car left Commonwealth Avenue and careered toward London Circuit, then overturned and mounted a footpath. Stanley Constance, 63, died after collision at Adelaide Avenue and Empire Circuit. Robert Knight, 28, died after being thrown from a car at Weston and Novar Streets. Melbourne toll reached ten with seven under 21. NSW toll rose to 735. Western Australia eyes Cape Lambert for iron ore exports amid price talks and port site considerations.
Late news from Canberra notes that fire alarms at the Street Oriental Studios were triggered today. Fire engines arrived and then left after confirming there was no blaze. No injuries reported and no damage observed.
Canberra driver Greg Cusack and Bill Brown of Sydney won the 12-hour race at Surfers Paradise driving a Ferrari LM250 for 46 miles. Second and third went to Paul Hawkins and Jackie Epstein in a Lola T70 Porsche Spyder. Alan Hamilton and Glyn Secatt faced a long pit repair after the Ferrari led early.

Four crew members from Williamstown to Sydney nine days overdue are presumed dead. Wreckage with orange hull and red keel was sighted by Persepolis and Port Windex attempts failed in heavy seas.
Two Melbourne fishermen Don Oke and Gordon Cullen were rescued near Lakes Entrance after a sand SOS signals were spotted from a Bell helicopter. A local skindiver and a diver from Bairnsdale aided. The pair, clinging to their overturned 17 ft cabin cruiser, were swept two miles along the coast before rescue.
Early fragmentary returns show General Thieu and Premier Ky ahead with 14 578 votes versus Tran Van Huong 8513. Vietcong attacks caused 26 deaths and injuries at polling sites across 8324 stations, mostly in the north and Mekong delta, with Saigon experiences including grenade and gunfire injuries.
Four Australian observers led by Ambassador to Japan Sir Allen Brown reported beaming about polling setups for the Vietnamese presidential elections. They noted strong organization even under Vietcong pressure, with Brown observing in Hue near the DMZ and others in Saigon Bien Hoa and Can Tho.

Fire swept a Cooma guest house on Sunday. Three women were admitted to Cooma District Hospital in satisfactory condition after guests fled in nightwear into freezing air as flames seized the ground floor and smoke filled the stairwell. A guest named Davis aided others by descending the stairs with a blanket rope and remained at risk as the blaze rose. The cause was not yet established.
Eleven people including six firemen were reported injured in a blast outside Wanchai fire station in Hong Kong. The explosion occurred near Wanchai district, less than a mile from the Central district, with four other firemen among the injured.
Police hunted a 19 year old Ozzie youth Salahettin Mustaffa from Seddon, last seen at 2 15 pm leaving the summit of Mount Donna Buang amid snow. He wandered off with a group and failed to rejoin them as a search focused on the snow covered peak about 40 miles east of Melbourne.
The Returned Services League plans action against moves to relocate graves of about 3,000 Commonwealth troops at Hadra near Alexandria. Australian War Graves officials in London and Canberra said graves of Australians, New Zealanders, Britons, Indians and Pakistanis may be moved, despite renewal of the agreement. The RSL will protest through the Department of External Affairs and the Interior, seeking government intervention. Spokesmen for the Commission in Melbourne declined to comment.
The Canberra Community Hospital premature nursery shows no new infections after three babies died last week. A spokesman said two babies with Friday night symptoms are in satisfactory condition, as is another previously confirmed case. The Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical Research investigates possible causes and will report to Health Minister Dr Forbes later this week.
