In Saigon the military governor demanded the return of three Buddhist monks who sought sanctuary in the U S Embassy. Brig. Gen. Thon That Dinh said he urged the Foreign Ministry to press the U S to surrender the monks as they slipped past police into the embassy.
Reports say Thich Tri Quang, a central figure in Buddhist protests, escaped arrest during martial law and sought refuge at the U S Embassy in Saigon. Observers see this move as a potential turning point in Vietnam U S relations and a bargaining lever over the Buddhist issue.
Riot squad fired red tear gas at about 300 demonstrators in Bau 20 miles south of Kuching injuring none. The U N assessment team arrived to begin hearings. The clash followed a Government truck dispute as security was stepped up in Serian and Bau after a warning of violence by the Clandestine Communist Organisation in Sarawak.
A solitary angler watches Cotter Dam as Canberra clubs mark the 1963-64 trout season opening. About 25 000 people expected for the Force Open Day at RAAF Base Canberra marking Air Force Week from September 9 to 15. The event features a large static display and a fly past with nine aircraft types including paratrooper free falls from an Iroquois helicopter and drops from Hercules transports. Traffic, parking and road routes are being organized by Canberra Police to manage crowds.
All-India Radio said up to 100 people feared dead and about 500 injured in a Kashmir earthquake. About fifty villagers were reported struck by the quake.
