Sydney Coast Hit by Cyclonic Rainstorms

Coastal areas around Sydney endured severe damage as a five minute cyclone forced evacuations in Maroubra and Smithfield. Homes were flattened and roofs ripped away while flooding reached several streets. Transport services were disrupted with trains and trams delayed and a Kiama to Nowra section reopening at 4 30 p m.

Train Struck By Landslide Near Mittagong Injures Ten

A landslide unleashed by torrential rain hit the South West Mail near Mittagong, injuring ten as rock and earth crashed onto the train. The driver kept the train moving through rubble aiding safety. four injured were taken to Berrima District Hospital as roads flooded and power outages disrupted travel across the region.

Nine Injured in Smash at Ginninderra

A stationary car carrying four adults and five children was struck by a passing truck on the Barton Highway near Ginninderra last night. One person was seriously injured while eight others sustained mostly shock and minor injuries. The truck driver Allan John Porter from Temora escaped unharmed. Canberra Ambulance transported the injured to hospital.

Prime Minister Menzies to Visit Cocos Islands

The Prime Minister Mr Menzies will visit Cocos Islands from December 12 to 13 on his return from Indonesia and Malaya. He plans to inspect installations there and meet Australians who maintain them. The party will travel in a Qantas chartered aircraft.

Lloyd urges joint underground tests for control system

In a House debate Mr. Lloyd proposed Soviet U S and Britain jointly conduct underground tests to build a robust control system for nuclear tests. He noted that all three powers could agree to halt atmospheric and underwater tests, which pose health risks.

Premises in Braddon Sold for 58000 at Auction

The Producers' Co operative Distributing Society Limited sold its Braddon blocks 13 and 14, section 21 premises for 58000 to the Shell Company of Australia by public auction. L J Hooker Ltd and Woodgers and Calthorpe conducted the sale amid spirited bidding with a first bid of 30000, vacant possession expected within six months as new premises near Fyshwick industrial area come online.

India Japan sign new iron ore contract

In Tokyo on Friday an agreement was signed for Japan to buy 2,200,000 tons of Indian iron ore from September 1959 to August 1960. The deal, part of the five year pact begun in 1957, was concluded between India’s D Sandilys and Japanese steel mills, representing a 450,000 ton increase over the prior year.

18 Die In Greek Air Disaster

An Olympic Airways Dakota flying Athens to Salonika crashed in mountainous terrain during heavy rain near Athens. The Greek plane caught fire in flight and 18 passengers, plus crew, were killed. Police said contact was lost 10 minutes after departure.
