Patriarch of Venice Elected Pope

Pasternak Expelled From Soviet Writers Union

Boris Pasternak, 1958 Nobel Prize winner in Literature, is expelled from the Soviet Writers' Union and stripped of the title Soviet Writer by a unanimous Presidium ruling. Tass reports the board cites his political and moral fall and alleged treason against Soviet people and socialism.

Half-Truce Continues for Quemoy in Formosa Strait

Chinese Communist guns fired random shelling around the Quemoy Islands then entered a staged six day pause under a new cease fire rule in the Formosa Strait. Nationalists say 19 offshore civilians were killed and 11 wounded in six days of strikes before the new halt.

Soviet Refuses To Join Trial Nuclear Halt

New York reports the Soviet Union declined to join the U S and Britain in a trial suspension of nuclear weapons tests. Zorin and Barco defended Soviet testing pace, noting fewer tests than the U S and Britain and urging a comprehensive accord before halting tests. Britain and the United States said they would study the Soviet position.

Wreckage of Southern Cloud Found Near Cabramurra

New Zealander Mr. T. R. Sonter a carpenter on the Snowy Mountains Schemes recovered part of the electrical equipment from the Southern Cloud wreckage found in thick scrub on a mountain near Cabramurra on Sunday Algery foot rests on a remaining motor as he identified the site.

Wreck of plane from Sydney to Melbourne identified

The Southern Cloud crash on March 21 1931 near a 5000 ft mountain is solved as officials identify the wreckage. Personal belongings including a gold watch stopped at 1 15, trinkets, a key ring with Clyde J Hood’s name, and six gold sovereigns were recovered. Passengers include W O Reilly Clara Stokes Clyde J Hood A Farrall L Margules and B Glasgow. Crew were pilot T W Shortridge and co pilot C L Dunnett. Relatives notified and remains to be buried on site with aircraft. Police continue inquiries into survivors and identify connections to Sydney Melbourne and Waulfield Victoria.

No Withdrawal Rumor Denied by Dutch Foreign Minister

Dutch Foreign Minister Josey Luna dismissed a report that the Netherlands would cede New Guinea to Australia. He stated the idea is purely speculative and no agreement exists. Funeral for Archbishop Mowil Held in Sydney Cathedral

Funeral arrangements for Archbishop Mowil proceed from St. Mary Cathedral with the coffin on display in the chantry. The service will be led by Bishop Hilliard and attended by Governor General Sir William Slim, State Governor Sir Eric Woodward, and federal and state representatives. The cortege will later move to New suburbs Crematorium. Members of Parliament paused to pay respects and the Legislative Assembly conveyed sorrow at the death.
