Girl electrocuted at water tap in Ballina home

A year-old Ballina girl, Margaret Lley, died after stepping on an exposed flex from a portable radio cord at Burnett Street while barefoot to take a drink. Police said the current was immediately discharged when the tap was turned on.

Grazing Restrictions urged for NSW Snowy area erosion risk

A report by a four man committee for the Australasian Academy of Science recommends that grazing above 4500 tons be controlled to save catchment areas. Professor Turner chairing the committee said about 1000 square miles of NSW highland country were affected mostly by sheep grazing. NSW last week banned grazing in areas affecting the Snowy Mountains scheme after a thin season. In Victoria the 850 square mile area threatened was for cattle grazing. Turner said restriction would extend to protect lowland pastures while soil conservation authorities study the best measures to prevent erosion.

Man Killed In Car Capsize at Cinninderra

A young man about 28 was killed when his car overturned and burned after a collision with a second vehicle on the Barton Highway near Ginninderra Post Office. A female passenger escaped unharmed. Police will name the deceased after kin notification. the second car's occupants, a man and his wife, were uninjured.

Motor Cyclist Dies In Smash In Melbourne Suburb

An 18 year old motor cyclist died instantly when his machine collided with an old model car at the intersection of Elliott and Bonar Streets Heidelberg late tonight. The youth was John Charles Mabboton of Chapman Street Macleod. A second fatal crash occurred as a youth swerved to avoid another and struck a tree on the Hume Highway at Wangaratta today. He was Mervyn Bury, 20, of Wangaratta.

Held against Will and Hurting Girls at Wanda Beach

Police report a group of youths abducted two 14 year old girls at Wanda Beach Cronulla. The girls were dragged into an old model car and driven away then dumped back. One girl was found injured internally at a Board of Health clinic. The incident drew about 1000 beachgoers. It is described as the worst case of its kind in Sydney for some time.

Woman Charged With Murder Of Old Man

Police at Coffs Harbour charged a woman with the murder of 70 year old James Daglas found in a Coffs Harbour house with extensive injuries to face and forehead from a heavy instrument. The death was reported by Azalea Athlone Currey, an elderly widow, who found the body on the door of a room in Jean Street where Dagus was known locally as a gold prospector.

Large brown snake killed on Black Mountain

An 6 ft brown snake was killed yesterday afternoon on Black Mountain. An 18 year old youth Cornelius Van Vliet of Brigalow Street O'Connor Topere with a friend said the snake slithered from the rocks while they were walking. He killed it with a stick.
