Sydney report cites NSW Police Commissioner Allan stating 300 deaths from drug overdose or misuse this year, mostly ages 16 to 25, amounting to about one third of the road toll. Police will enforce new drug laws starting next Wednesday.
The Senate denounced the appointment of A P Fleming as Parliamentary Librarian as a nonsensical retrograde step. Senator Turnbull attacked it as connivance, arguing it would take years to justify the move, while Senator Burnie insisted a librarian should hold the post. The anti drug campaign was also outlined at a health police education press conference with officials present in Sydney.
Geoffrey Anderson a 24 year old rent collector was knocked down and robbed of 900 dollars near the unmanned suburban police station at Maribyrnong tonight.
Canberra announces direct dialing from November 1 to 48 Australian centres including Adelaide and Brisbane enabling three digit area codes. The move forms part of a Commonwealth wide Subscriber Trunk Dialling system with rates from 0.1 to 0.4 pounds per minute depending on distance and time. The STD expansion raises concerns about public servants using trunk lines and a Treasury circular guides STD usage.
Australian Communist trade union leader Dr J Cairns attacked an AMA emergency plan said to resist any future government. He warned nationalising medicine would be wrong. AMA Federal President Dr C O F Rieger confirmed a 1962 plan discussed with government but called it a dead issue.

The Labor Party will join a full scale Parliamentary debate on the Vietnam war in the House of Representatives on Tuesday. Leader Mr Whitlam and senior ministers are expected to participate after External Affairs Minister Mr Hasluck spoke in the House and the adjournment was opened for debate.
In a long statement Mr Hasluck urges that the war is being won through increased strength and logistics while warning against peace placards that push for continued conflict. He says a political settlement is the only path, notes terrorism near the border, and asserts allied forces are now applying strong pressure with growing combat power and higher enemy losses.
A statue commemorating Australia's Desert Mounted Corps in World War I was uncrated yesterday morning at the Department of Supply stores section in Kingston. The statue, weighing about four tons, was cast in bronze and depicts a horseman defending New Zealand. The carving is by Bourne sculptor Mr Re Drewes, with two copies of the original statue now prepared for display or shipment.
Sydney reports that only heavy rain could salvage the drought in south west New South Wales. The Conservation Minister Be said the drought aid need could be eight million dollars, up from six million three weeks earlier. In Adelaide the Lands Minister Corcoran noted South Australia’s drought aid. The Treasurer McMahon said the Commonwealth would make initial rough payments of two. Wheat yields are down. Page 21.
