Rescue workers reached seven of 49 miners trapped by floodwaters in an iron ore mine in Hildesheim Germany. They were found 75 feet below the surface through a drilled shaft opening as water stood about 200 feet from the surface in the 330 foot shaft.
Ninety miners trapped after a mud and water torrent swept a shaft at Hildesheim Hanover last night. About 74 escaped via lift shaft or connecting tunnels to a nearby disused mine. Rescuers plan to widen the shaft to haul others to safety.
The Jaycees plan a national headquarters in the national capital with a residence for the manager. A spokesman said plans and specifications will be prepared for the 1964 mid year executive meeting and approved or amended. National Capital Development Commissioner J W Overall noted a Turner site has been allocated and called the project important.
British Foreign Secretary R A Butler arrived in The Hague for talks with six Common Market ministers on Britain’s role in Europe. He will chair the two day Western European Union Ministerial Council session and met French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville at the French Ambassador’s residence.
Two shotgun blasts damaged the wooden gate of the house where Pope Paul was born in Rome. A gatekeeper heard two shots before dawn and ran out to see a speeding car flee, police told the Associated Press of America.
Poor women join the first metal sculpture course at Canberra Technical College to weld scrap metal into artistic creations. Teacher H Le Grand says the course, started this year, was so successful that two more will be offered next year. Twelve students, including four girls, completed the course this year. New Delhi reports more than 4,000 Indian airmen and about 100 jet planes will join joint air exercises next month with the Royal Australian Air Force British Royal Air Force and United States Air Force. The Indian Air Force will deploy 56 Gnat and Hunter fighters with 18 U S F 100s and 12 British Javelins. Canberra bombers from R A A F and 36 Indian Canberras will act as enemy aircraft.
Dr. Roger Berry and Mr. Wilfred Trillwood report in the British Medical Journal that fluoride kills human and animal cells in test tube conditions. The two researchers say more studies are needed to assess fluoride effects on the whole human body.
Industrialist Walter F. Dillingham known as Mr. Hawaii died at his home this week United Press International reported. He founded and led the Hawaiian Dredging Company which carried out harbour improvement and land reclamation projects in Hawaii and worldwide. He also served as director of several major Hawaii firms.
Three young Canbe men plan a 50 mile walk from Canberra Police Station to Bredbo aiming for 16 to 18 hours. The trio Chris McCormack 19 Bob Haas and Eddie Wheeler work in defence and navy departments and trained for weeks by walking nightly. They say they are not aiming to set records and follow the Kennedy challenge inspired by US soldiers.

Burglars stole jewels and a fur stole from the New York home of Dr. Ralph Bunche, United Nations under secretary for special political affairs. Jewelry valued at over 5 000 dollars disappeared from an upstairs bedroom while Mrs. Bunche was in the ground floor kitchen. The theft was discovered when a store found by a hedge near the house.
The group of four Canberra residents and a Queanbeyan man shared the £12,000 first prize in Special Lottery 1047 yesterday. Winners named Anything were Arthur Bates of Narrabundah, Bob McJannett and Ian McJannett of Griffith, B Craze of Turner Flats, and A R Clark of Queanbeyan. The ticket, bought in Bates’ name at a Manuka newsagency, will fund a new car and a holiday, though Bates plans to work on Monday to fulfill ongoing contracts.
