Two Liberal members, Sir Wilfrid Kent Hughes and Killen of Queensland, voted against government on the closure of debate in the House of Representatives on the Prime Minister Menzies United Nations statement.
In a dramatic House debate the government carried a gag on discussion of Mr Menzies controversial four-Power Summit amendment. Opposition leaders criticized Menzies for not consulting neighbours, urging a foreign policy welcome to Asian nations and a more independent stance in the Pacific region.
Two people were killed and three badly hurt yesterday when a car exploded on an autobahn near Dortmund, West Germany. A baby weeks old was found unscathed. Police know the blast cause is unknown as wreckage damaged two other cars.
UN forces blocked a Congo maneuver after Colonel Mobutu warned against advancing from Thysville toward the capital. Tense scenes followed as Congolese troops and police clashed, a Courier Africa office was attacked, and authorities ordered the paper banned before it resumed printing.
In Colombo, Justice Sansoni of the Ceylon Supreme Court endorses a warrant for the arrest of Stephen Leslie Bradley for the kidnap murder of Graeme Thorne. The endorsement allows execution within Ceylon, with Crown counsel to present Bradley’s case to a Sydney magistrate. Mrs Bradley expresses willingness to return.
A Comet airliner carrying the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh reported two Sabre jet fighters on a collision course near their Royal flight. The pilots described the jets as bearing iron crosses and the Amsterdam ATC log labeled the event a near miss during the return from a Danish royal weekend.
Cuba, in retaliation for the U S embargo, confiscates 139 American companies while 250 others continue to operate. The government also labels television hero Hopalong Cassidy as an Enemy of Cuba, linking the actor to a business empire chaired by Eisenhower and Herter.
