Seven survive 11 days after Blythe Star sinking

Ten men from the Blythe Star crew were aboard a life raft after the ship capsized near Tasmania on October 13. Seven were found alive at Dunally by a logging contractor after days of walking inland, while three died of exposure or in the raft. Survivors were ferried to Hobart by helicopter from Deep Bay with rescuers detailing harrowing conditions at sea and the crew’s struggle to endure. Captain Cruickshank described the eight day ordeal and effort to reach shore, aided by flares, rockets, and a dangerous sea. The incident prompted government inquiries and a senior rescue officer to coordinate inquiries into the sinking.
