Spokesmen described shelling of Egyptian Port Ibrahim refineries near Port Tawfiq with fires spreading as Cairo Radio reported Israeli artillery strikes on Suez. Egypt claimed it opened fire first and downed a Mirage jet while destroying four Israeli tanks as UN observers failed to halt hostilities.
Jonathan Gaul reports that Australia New Zealand and Britain agreed to grant full and unqualified independence to Nauru the small Pacific island famed for its phosphate wealth. Meant to date it to January 31 independence day the move ends foreign affairs powers retained by Australia, with Nauru set to control its future amid a predicted $400 million bounty from phosphate over 30 years. Chief Hammer DeRoburt welcomed the decision while opponents called for careful handling of sovereignty and resources.
US aircraft bombed Phuc Yen airfield outside Hanoi the largest MiG base in North Vietnam for the first time in the war and claimed one MiG-21 down. The base, key to Hanoi defences, is ringed by heavy anti aircraft and missiles. Bombing paused briefly after a second straight day of raids.
International Minerals and Chemical Corporation announced the discovery of a phosphate deposit in northern Australia. The find is estimated at about 500 million tons and is believed to be among the largest in the Asia-Pacific region, signaling a major resource development for the company.
Independent senator Douglas Clive Hannaford of South Australia collapsed in Question Time and died shortly after in Canberra. Ansett ANA and TAA each curtailed services while conserving pilot hours to prevent the limit from expiring before month’s end.
In Canberra six classes of Roman Catholic schoolchildren about 170 pupils will be housed at two State primary schools in the Woden Valley during the first term next year. Catholic teachers will instruct and supervise activities while the Interior Minister Mr Nixon announced the plan after delays in funding for Pearce and Marist Brothers school projects. The arrangement, supported by Archbishop Cahill’s representatives, aims to ease accommodation and maintain parity with non Catholic pupils while the broader finance issues are resolved.
