A tense world waited for Russia to challenge the U S blockade of Cuba as a large U S armada swept Atlantic lanes ready to sink Russian merchant ships if inspections are refused.
Reports from the Cuban crisis state Kennedy's blockade goes into effect at midnight and both sides warn of possible nuclear war. Castro calls the blockade dangerous while the Soviet Union denounces it. U.N. Security Council discussions continue as military movements and measures escalate.
London police clashed with about 2 000 demonstrators outside the U S Embassy as crowds protested the Cuban blockade. Police formed a cordon and pushed back marchers. many were carried away. Similar protests occurred in Manchester Milan and other cities with slogans like Hands Off Cuba and Down With Kennedy.
West Berlin police report large Soviet military convoys traveling by road in East Germany toward Berlin. Sightings near the interzonal road to Hamburg and along the East German autobahn raise questions whether convoys are Soviet or East German. Kruschev, Hoffman and Malinovsky pictured amid talks on potential peace treaty access to Berlin.
reports from New Delhi say Chinese forces near Tawang within five miles of the town as Nehru and Chou En Lai discuss a three point settlement. Menon vows no surrender and says India will drive out aggressors to the last man.
City and suburban butcher shops faced the daily routine with both pros and apprentices working. The Master Butchers' Association resolved to allow Wednesday afternoon work in summer and Saturday morning work in winter if employees wished. Commissioner Findlay noted workers should not be tied to a five and a half day week. Some shops already had full staffing and overtime pay was planned. Butchers reported no difficulty meeting customer needs.
Australia will spend 650.7 million pounds over three years to strengthen Navy Army and Air Force manpower and equipment. The plan includes more Mirage jets helicopters and missiles with naval ships and new submarines under consideration and an expanded air force with eight extra Iroquois and heavy lift helicopters.
