ACTU seeks 4.2 per cent pay rise in wage indexation push

Melbourne reports the ACTU will push for at least a 4.2 per cent wage increase for Australian workers next month. If granted, average weekly pay would rise about $7.50 from about $180. The Arbitration Commission will hear the case next week, with the rise due to operate from November 15. The move combines a 2.2 per cent CPI rise in the September quarter and prior losses in indexation decisions. ACTU President Hawke argues full wage indexation curbs inflation and notes CPI rises lag behind wage gains by months.
