Indian soldiers faced overwhelming Chinese Communist forces on at least three fronts along the northern border. As they fell back, leaders pledged to regain the lost territory and the government admitted four outposts were lost.
The two nations fight along the border for a third day with shots from Chinese anti aircraft guns reported downing an Indian helicopter. Nehru cites three to four miles of advance in the north east while skirmishes occur near Pangong Lakes and Chushul airfield. Washington and London describe the actions as a threat to India's national integrity and discuss potential military aid.
The American Cancer Society announced that 1 200 000 people in the United States have been spared cancer. The spokesman estimated about 177 000 developing the disease in the coming year would be saved.
