Victorian police booked more than 3 000 drivers in a state wide blitz. Superintendent A H Arnold said 621 were speeding 364 lighting ce s 17 drunken driving 55 dangerous negligent and reckless driving 386 unroadworthy vehicles 51 unregistered vehicles and the remainder for minor offences.
Yesterday in Canberra the high reached 83.8 degrees at about 3 pm making it the hottest day since March. The previous peak this year was 85 degrees on March 8. Late last night temperatures remained just above 70 degrees.
Sir Robert Menzies addressed the Federal Council of the Liberal Party urging a United Nations backed plan for Middle East peace. He called for high level talks to remove root causes of tension, ensure Arab-Israeli borders are settled, refugees resolved, and nonmilitary aid to foster cooperation. He warned Soviet influence seeks to widen war shadows and stressed universal disarmament.
Mr Menzies received an honorary Doctor of Science from New South Wales University of Technology today. Prof Wallace Worth, the university chancellor, conferred the degree.
The Canberra City Council discusses a civic reception for the Queen Mother. Sir Allen Brown proposes a reception similar to 1954 and a possible civic ball. Mr Quinane notes the draft programme was sent to London for the Queen Mother’s consideration. Mr Day questions endless receptions but supports council input on arrangements.
Housing statistics for the quarter ended September 30 show over 1,000 home units either under construction or offered for tender. The Advisory Council noted this as a potential first big push of the accelerated housing program. Figures include 606 houses and 460 flats under construction, 97 houses offered to builders, 158 for tender, and 251 on the housing wasting list at September 0 with 4,234 in the department’s compulsory transfers.

Police conducted an intensive search for a man and a woman believed to have been in a car that plunged into the Brisbane River near Moggillie early yesterday. The missing are Sergeant I Peter Owat-Atkinson 32 of Grovely and Mrs Ivy Miller 40 of New Farm a barmaid at a Queen Street hotel.
In Thrace last night a collision between an express and a local train killed 25 and wounded 160. Eyewitnesses described the scene as a slaughter house as the Simplon express bound for Babylonica collided with the Istanbul bound local from Edirne. The toll was expected to rise and the accident disrupted railway service.
Canberra police said the New Zealand pilot killed when a Canberra Aero Club Chipmunk crashed at Pine Island will have the name released at 10 am. Next of kin have been notified and the coroner visited the crash site. Inquest date not yet set.
