The unemployed total at month end dropped by 8,343 to 58,886 the lowest since December 1960. The fall, about 12 per cent, could influence a snap election call by Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies after talks with Labour Minister McMahon and Treasurer Holt.

The Canberra Liberal branch backed the Interior Minister and the Advisory Council in fluoridating the ACT water supply. Only two of 45 attendees opposed the resolution after a debate led by Mr. Freeth who argued personal liberty must yield to community good.
