Canberra Winner in German Quest Miss Mittelfranken

Miss Robyn Walter a 23 year old from Forrest Canberra won Miss Mittelfranken in Nuremberg Germany as part of Oktoberfest preliminaries. Born in Australia she ran a fashion boutique in West Germany for three years before returning home for Canberra Oktoberfest celebrations starting today.

ABC blames staff cuts and costs for hard year

The Australian Broadcasting Commission reports a tough year due to higher costs and government staff cuts. Despite 7.2 percent staff reductions from 7,048 to 6,539 and 60.5 percent Australian content, funding debates and proposed commitments drew criticism. The year saw the loss of Melbourne ethnic radio station 34Z, valued by various community groups, and promises of future broadcasting funding were questioned.

The Industries Assistance Commission reports 1975 76 profits among cosmetics tobacco chemical footwear soap knitting mills and clothing and transport equipment from 20.2 to 31.7 percent while receiving 24 to 70 percent average assistance in 1973 74. It criticizes continuing protection arguing it harms weaker sectors and reduces overall wealth and export opportunities. The AFF questions protection's cost to consumers and calls for reforms linked to broader economic capacity. Probable source of petrol leak linked to Cinema blast

After a nine day inquest into last Februarys explosion at Center Cinema Coroner Kilduff found the Mobil Cinema Service Centre storage tanks or lines as the probable source and urged urgent removal of remaining petrol beneath the city. He recommended installing a recovery bore and constant monitoring. The blaze may have been sparked when an oxy acetylene torch used by a plumber ignited petrol fumes in the cinema sewage injector pit. Fifty three witnesses and over eighty exhibits were examined with evidence focusing on petrol deliveries sales and underground tanks at the site Mobil Oil Australia Ltd said Mobil will cooperate with authorities to implement coroner recommendations.

Doubts on legality of parking charges in Canberra

The legality of about 300 parking cases is in doubt after a Canberra magistrate rejected a parking prosecution. Justice Dainer upheld that the information against journalist Jack Waterford did not disclose an offence as required by law. Waterford’s case centered on parking near the ACT Law Courts in January and argued the summons must allege non payment of a fine or a driver declaration.
