A fire under a bridge near Menangle 40 miles south of Sydney delayed the main southern line tonight. Sparks from a passing engine caused the blaze and disrupted service across the area.

A series of crashes near Newborough and Moe in Victoria left one woman dead and many injured. An ambulance collided with a car rushing a child victim to hospital, killing Ellen May Swasbrick 34 of Bundalaguah.
