President Kennedy told a national audience Berlin poses a danger cloaked in history as he framed U S aims to protect vital interests without war amid the nuclear weapons stalemate. He described the current era as perhaps the most dangerous in human history and urged cautious resolve.
Kennedy says talks with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko show no quick path to solving Berlin access dispute. He warns West Berlin must not be denied rights as U S defense moves 10 000 troops to Europe. Gromyko and Home provoke warnings of possible war if Berlin access is blocked.
President Kennedy steps from his plane at Quonset Point Rhode Island as Caroline waves from the back of her seat. Sailors aboard the USS Essex render a Presidential Salute on the carrier’s flight deck during the arrival from Washington for a weekend at Newport.
Government fears foreign control of key industries and broad ownership by overseas investors. A £54 million Cobar copper revival is planned while two high rollers from Asia pursue a £17.6 million bid for Broken Hill South, with a 22 shillings per share offer and possible overseas partnership.
Mr Crossman said the association rejected action on rent increases after reviewing a legal opinion by Kerr QC of Sydney. The Trades and Labour Council will meet Monday to consider Kerr's advice. Rent rises affect over 5000 Commonwealth owned houses and flats. Details will be released to members early in the week.
Thirteen British soldiers died and 13 were injured when an Hastings Transport aircraft crashed during takeoff at Al Adem Libya Tuesday night. An RAF spokesman said four crew escaped unhurt while 13 were injured with eight slightly and one seriously hurt.
The United Nations General Assembly approved a censure against South Africa over Foreign Minister Eric Louw’s speech. The 67 to 1 vote with 200 abstentions judged the remarks offensive and unfounded, condemning apartheid and questioning African governance. Liberia and Ethiopia highlighted dire living conditions.
The New South Wales Board of Health opened a session to review medical evidence given at the Coroners Court inquest into the death of Dr. James Macrae Yeates. The board examined whether Dr Douglas L. Fearon breached professional ethics in his testimony, a matter referred from the Health Department after Justice Department depositions. The interview with Fearon and his solicitor occurred last week with Meyers present.
The Postmaster General said all Canberra telephone services cut by the September 22 fire will be restored today. He praised engineers for reconnecting 5,319 of 5,506 services by Wednesday and noted remaining lines were being routed to Barton Manuka and portable units for final restoration.
