The League of Nations Assembly condemned Italy with Austria and Hungary dissenting. Britain and France draft sanctions including ban on foreign loans and arms materials, with a likely 50 nation majority and a 10 day task for the Sanctions Coordination Committee.
In Geneva Baron Aloisi opened the League Assembly with a fierce critique of the council. He demanded expansion for Italy and justice, accusing the body of ignoring Italy’s memorandum on Abyssinia and of bias in its procedures. He argued Italy upheld treaties and disarmament while calling for harmony between the Covenant’s revolution clause and conservation aims.
London reports the League of Nations Assembly at Geneva approves Council sanctions policy with Austria and Hungary abstaining. Empire representatives vow to cut off supplies to Italy. A coordination committee, led by Eden, to be formed with multiple nations. Debate over pace and scope of sanctions continues.

A Sydney Labour Council conference of trade union delegates and Labour bodies declared itself totally opposed to sanctions by the League of Nations. It urged the Federal Government to recall the cruiser Australia from overseas and to impose an embargo on war material exports.
Intense heat was recorded across the western district with heavy red dust and gale winds. Broken Hill reported dust covering dwellings. Bourke conveyed a similar perilous condition.
Attorney General Menzies announced Sir John Latham will succeed Sir Frank Gavan Duffy as Chief Justice of the High Court. The commission issues today and swearing in by Governor-General Isaacs at Canberra is anticipated. Salary is £3500 a year. Cabinet gave initial consideration yesterday and formal acceptance arrived last night. Latham, prominent in politics, is praised for constitutional insight and legal distinction.
The House adjourned amid a Labour protest over Sir John Latham's appointment not being announced in Parliament. Attorney-General Menzies said the appointment was not finalized until last night. A gag motion passed as most opposition members left the chamber while Curtin Brennan and Green remained.
The Prime Minister announced a temporary second War Pensions Entitlement Appeal Tribunal to ease hearing delays. Appeals from Queensland New South Wales and Tasmania will go to Tribunal No 1, while Victoria South Australia and Western Australia go to Tribunal No 2. C C Mungon is appointed chairman No 2. Ralston remains No 1 chairman. Birks is government nominee to No 1. Jackson named as soldiers’ organisations representative. Sessions run six months with possible extension and equal salaries to existing tribunal members.
The Italian columns near Aksum have the city encircled with monks guarding relics fleeing with treasures. The Daily Telegraph Rome source notes Abyssinians fear casualties after four days of fighting with alleged heavy losses.
In Melbourne on Thursday two miners died at Napoleon Gold Mine. Gordon Taylor 27 of Golden Square and another worker were being lowered in a cage when the bucket or hoist failed. Both men were found dead after being hauled to the surface.
Defence Minister Mr Parkhill announced an intensive search for the missing airliner Loina. HMAS Tattoo at Flinders Naval Depot will join Olive Dam on the mine sweeper route to Flinders Island to locate the wreck with possible third vessel and derrick aid if needed. work to begin Saturday.
