The Conservatives secure a solid victory in Britain winning 360 seats with Labour at 254 and Liberals at five as counting nears completion. Prime Minister Macmillan greets cheering supporters while Labour leader Gaitskell concedes defeat in Leeds.
In Botany Bay scrub the two escapees from Long Bay Gaol remain at large as police and warders expand the search. A naval helicopter assisted ground teams with more than 250 officers involved and police boats patrolling the coast. Authorities considered arming army flame throwers to flush them out. Names cited include Kevin John Simmonds 24 and Allan Newcombe 20.
President Eisenhower, in consultation with Britain and France, may meet with Macmillan and De Gaulle before a formal summit with Khrushchev. He and Khrushchev agreed there would be no time limit on Berlin negotiations, easing earlier objections to a summit. Eisenhower plans early steps toward a summit.
Dr Evatt urged world leaders to meet and talk to widen agreements with no disagreements left. He praised Nehru as the greatest conciliator and criticized excluding Communist China from the United Nations, arguing past crimes should not bar future membership.
General Thomas D. White and senior defense officials meet with Prime Minister Mr Menzies in his Parliament House suite yesterday. Ambassador William J. Sebald and Defence Secretary Mr McElroy also attended the talks to discuss security and alliance matters.
