The New York Times reports talks between President Kennedy and Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko in Berlin went badly with a Gromyko memorandum offering little hope for fruitful negotiations soon. Washington dispatch notes no credible path forward.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk described three New York meetings with Andrei Gromyko and a White House talks as serious and constructive though not negotiations in the usual sense. He noted no clear outcome and said progress was only preliminary. Gromyko said the talks were useful and pressed for East German sovereignty over Berlin with limited guarantees for West Berlin. Border incidents in Berlin reported as Communist police detained West Berliners returning to the city.
In Sydney on Sunday a sandbank collapse swept scores of people into the water near Cronulla. All available lifesavers used boards and surf skis to rescue the crowd. Most reached the shore unaided but over 40 people required aid to reach safety.
