South Africa Votes to Become a Republic in Referendum

Final results from South Africa's referendum show 818,185 votes for a republic and 736,263 against, a clear majority as 57 years after Boer War. White voters in Natal and English-speaking regions favored the move, while Natal and other areas remained largely opposed. The outcome raises questions about Commonwealth status and future constitutional ties with the United Kingdom and Australia.

No Buyer For Giant Krupp Industries

An International committee concluded there is little chance of finding a buyer for the total Krupp steel holdings. A West German Foreign Office spokesman said the report did not recommend freeing Alfred Krupp from a postwar sale deadline. The time limit expires January 31, 1961, with two extensions already granted.
