US will not match rockets with Russia

US space chief Keith Glennan said in Chicago that America will not match Soviet rocket feats. Dr. Herbert York noted the US trails in space research rockets but remains ahead on intercontinental missiles level, while stressing cautious, engineered progress over headline-grabbing stunts. Rocket Fuel Blast Kills Two at Hercules Plant

Two men died when 1000 lbs of experimental rocket fuel for the Minuteman ICBM exploded at the Hercules Powder Company plant in Kenis New Jersey. Bodies found in the rubble of the mixing shed where the powder was being mixed by remote control.

Long cold ride to gaol ends in arrest in Vienna

Austrian police arrested Hungarian Janos Tari after a 542 mile ride from Frankfurt to Vienna on a freezing train. Tari, unable to pay fare, rode beneath the carriage passage and was found at Vienna West railway station in a 150 Swiss suit, awaiting removal.

Woolbuyers to Operate at Goulburn Wool Sale

Twenty members of the Woolbuyers Association will conduct business at the opening of the Goulburn wool sales. After a ban last season, NSW Attorney General announced legislation to outlaw it retroactively. Officials expect a full clearance of 9 500 bales with about 50 buyers, including West Australian participants.

Australia eyes migrant intake cap of sixty thousand five hundred

The Minister for Immigration Mr Downer said more than half of the proposed intake would be from Britain and British sources. He announced in the House of Representatives that 65 000 migrants would come from Britain or British sources with 35 000 arriving as assisted migrants. The government views overseas conditions and Canadian migration plans as key issues but expects the target to be reached with a majority of migrants of British nationality.

Stuart Could Be Freed After Twelve Years

The Premier explained commutation may release a prisoner found guilty of murder after about twelve years if release authorities are satisfied the inmate is unlikely to reoffend. The policy allows for life sentences via commutation and requires medical or mental health considerations in some cases.
