Soviet officials announced the third cosmic rocket placed an interplanetary station into orbit near the moon after a mule stage booster. The station, weighing about 613 tons, carries scientific gear and will transmit data daily via two radio stations.
In brutal seas off Bateman's Bay the yacht Toll Gate Winnd sank after crashing rocks. skipper Philip Rudder of St Ives withdrew earlier due to illness. He and crew spent hours adrift before rescue by a fishing trawler and hospitalisation at Royal North Shore. Weather warnings followed.
A Salisbury weapons research spokesman said the satellite tracking station at Woomera is on standby and in contact with Washington as camera crews observe.
