A Navy jet fighter crashed into Sydney Harbour during a 500 mph mid air stunt. The other plane was damaged and landed at Nowra Naval Base. It marks the second crash involving a stunting service team in seven weeks.
Lieut. Albert Riley parachuted safely into the harbour after his plane spun out of control during a loop in a display by the Venom Checkmates. He was rescued by a crash boat and taken to Garden Island Naval Base, then Balmoral Base hospital, while Lieut. Barry Roberts landed safely at Nowra. Six RAAF pilots had died in a separate August 15 accident near East Sale Base, Victoria.
Lieut Albert Riley, 27, was rescued in a stretcher after parachuting from 1,200 feet during an air show at Sydney Harbour. He escaped with minor injuries as two fighters collided. the other pilot managed to return his damaged plane to Nowra.
At 1 pm 20 Navy planes will fly in formation over the city passing Queanbeyan and Parliament House. Venom jets of the Checkmates will perform a 12 minute aerobatic display before a second mass flypast near Parliament House. The lineup includes 12 Gannet aircraft six Venom fighters and two Sea Furies with phased retirement next year for new anti-submarine helicopters.

At the Old Bailey four Britons faced charges under the Public Order Act 1936 for organizing a Spearhead Nazi group. Colin Jordan led the group with associates John Tyndale Dennis Pirie and Rosa Kerr-Ritchie. exhibits included Hitler imagery and equipment. All pleaded guilty and defended themselves as evidence showed training and display of force to promote racial nationalism.
Two ANU professors W D Barrie and J W Davidson helped save Guerrilla Bay and Rosedale North in a Monday bushfire on a three mile front. Canberra residents Tony Groube and David Routledge aided Bateman's Bay Fire Brigade, cutting two miles of fire breaks and using water tankers and knapsack sprays to shield the settlements.
