Australian Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies and Japanese Premier Hayato Ikeda issued a joint communique pledging cooperation for peace and economic progress in the Malaysia area. They welcomed Malaysia’s formation and voiced concern over the regional situation after a more than three hour meeting.
The report notes Mr Ikeda and Sir Robert Menzies in Canberra stressing end to bitter memories of war and urging cooperation for economic growth in the Western Pacific. Ikeda laid a wreath at the War Memorial. a tense incident occurred when a man shouted at him. The leaders welcomed Malaysia’s formation, backed Colombo Plan collaboration, and approved a partial nuclear test ban. They praised a new Australia Japan trade pact and pledged closer political and cultural ties.
Police will escort a 17 year old from Victoria to Sydney under an extradition order granted today. The youth was interviewed at Beechworth after the body of Eric Davies 39 caravan park proprietor of Lilac Grove Goulburn was found yesterday in a locked garage behind his home with a monkey wrench nearby.

He warned constitutional issues if Canberra joined a NSW totalisator and NSW taxation would apply. Dr T H Harrison challenged the constitutional hurdles and indicated no clear difficulty in joining the NSW totalisator.
British urged evacuation of 140 women and children from the Shell oil plant at Balikpapan due to a tense situation. Dr Grace Thornton said the families would fly to Singapore within days as the British consul reported the desire to leave.
A spokesman for the Australian Indonesia Shipping Conference said Australian exports to Indonesia via Singapore have stopped harming many small exporters. Indonesian ports will grant cargo clearance only for direct shipments to Jakarta. The Trade Department in Canberra noted ships were taking only full Indonesian cargoes.
