More than 5.6 million electors vote today to choose whether the Liberal Country Party government continues or the ALP forms the next government. About 10,000 polling booths open at 8 am and close at 8 pm with first returns due at Albert Hall around 8.30 pm.
Voters face compulsory cast with penalties up to £2. A total of 400 candidates contest 123 House seats and Queensland Senate. Tally room results will be televised to Canberra Sydney and Melbourne as elections near. Prime Minister Menzies and Opposition Leader Calwell vow victory after multi state campaigns and travel milestones.
Today voters in the ACT face campaigns by sitting Labour member J R Fraser and Liberal candidate E R Calvert. Fraser highlights housing and full representation with a pledge to grant full voting rights for ACT members. Calvert endorses full representation and urges ACT representation in the Senate.
The Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies and other leaders express confidence after last night’s election. Menzies stresses security and defence as priorities with domestic policies to support housing and education. Calwell touts Labour growth plans and full employment while McEwen backs faster growth for national wealth.
Canberra police investigation led by Det. R. G. G. Turner tracks a young, slim forger who cashed cheques at small outlets, clubs and petrol stations. The suspect, posing as Mr. Brighton, used a public phone to clear the way then telephoned the outlet to allow the cheque to be cashed. He has banked around £532 in the past month and is described as 20 to 23 years old, fair to ruddy, sandy hair, blemished face, about 5 ft 9 in.
AP reported from Djakarta that Presidential decree number 241 freezes enterprises partly or wholly owned or controlled by Malaysians or Indonesian nationals living in Malaysia. The move is part of Indonesia's economic confrontation with Malaysia and follows confiscation of rubber processing enterprises.
The Australian National University yesterday released results from examinations in the faculties of Arts Economics and Oriental Studies. Details appear on pages 3 11 and 12.
President Johnson presided over a White House schedule with Cabinet talks and noted the renaming of Cape Canaveral to honor Kennedy. He recalled the first U S satellite launch from Cape Canaveral on January 31, 1958 and referenced later space milestones. He quoted Lincoln and urged the nation to move forward with resolve.
