A 1959 light brown Holden led police through ten miles of Canberra streets at high speed before crashing into a water drain in Bowen Park Barton while trying to dodge two patrol cars in Wentworth Avenue. Police offered no comment on the chase as details emerged.
A 22-year-old man was arrested after a high speed chase that began around 6 40 pm when a driver sped off from police. Officers followed to the south side of Canberra then into Bowen Park where the vehicle skidded into a drain. Police pulled the suspect from water and detained him as crowds gathered. Police blocked Civic and Barton streets during a 20 minute pursuit. no injuries were reported.
Former National Development Minister Fairbairn, who moved to the back bench, won the Government's nomination for chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs after a second ballot, defeating Senator M. Cormack by one vote. The 12 Government nominees, nine Liberals and three Country Party MPs, produced a tied first ballot.
