Country Party members in the House of Representatives will oppose the proposed redistribution of Federal electoral boundaries. A special Canberra meeting yesterday resolved to vote against the plan, which faces defeat if Labour backs a united opposition. Proposals go to the House within two weeks.
Boundaries Commissioners report calls the plan “cock-eyed” as it moves state by state to approve changes. The Country Party opposes a cut in seats arguing rural voices must be preserved, while McEwen notes counting many nonvoters and some aborigines skews results. Parliament may amend the Representation Act to adjust numbers.
The Representation and Electoral Acts set quotas and boundary rules as commissioners propose a four seat redistribution. McEwen says current proposals diverge by 24 percent from the quota. Labour MPs from Queensland NSW and WA oppose the boundary plan, while Liberals lean toward Country Party backed redraw to protect rural representation.
