Holiday Work Refused by ACT Branch Meeting

Members of the A C T branch of the Building Workers' Industrial Union decided at a Trades Hall meeting not to offer for work during the Christmas close-down. Commissioner Findlay ruled in the Arbitration Court that work at Telopea Park School North Ainslie School St Eamo College and Forrest School should continue during the close-down. The unions were directed to reconsider their opposition. The meeting, largely attended, unanimously affirmed the policy not to work during the break. The hearing on employers’ permission to carry on during the close-down to be resumed Friday.

Liberals Seek Nominations For Eden Monaro

The N S W Liberal Party calls for nominations for the Eden Monaro electorate for the next Federal elections. General secretary J L Carrick said nominations would be taken at the party’s headquarters with more details available from him. Pre selection is planned for mid February on the South Coast likely Bateman’s Bay, with a committee formed entirely of delegates from Eden Monaro branches. The pre selection will be secret and use a preferential ballot.

N S W Refuses Extra Public Holiday Request

The NSW cabinet rejected a bid by the Trades and Labour Council for an additional public holiday on December 27. The proposed five day break from Christmas to the following Monday would disrupt shopping and cause widespread inconvenience. The Commonwealth Public Service had already granted the holiday. Premier Cahill noted the decision to avoid disruption.

Constable Fined Over Van Driving Charge

AP-Reuter reports constable Thomas Lloyd was fined £3 for driving a police van with due care and attention. He had pleaded not guilty and was found not guilty of dangerous driving.
