Peking and New Delhi announced simultaneously that the promised border ceasefire is in effect. Indian Prime Minister Nehru told Parliament that firing has ceased since last night and even before that.
The Chinese Seomaing reported that a cease-fire would take effect December 1 with forces withdrawing to positions 20 kilometres behind the Jingpe line. The move aims to reopen peaceful negotiations and settle the boundary question, while India cautions China’s intentions remain in talks. Reports from Gauhali Assam mention Chinese troops advancing four miles from a foothills village, and international aid discussions include Washington’s military assistance to India.
The Norwegian tanker Thorald Brovig, 21,634 tons, collides with the Japanese vessel Munakata Maru, 2,972 tons, causing a fierce blaze. The Munakata Maru crew of 37 all perish, and the Thorald Brovig crew of 47 loses three.
