In Brisbane a rally with over 3,000 supporters saw opposition leader Whitlam call Fraser’s government tainted. Hayden labeled the Lynch affair a symptom of broad tax evasion in the ministry while Lynch himself was ordered back to hospital days after heartening campaign trails.
Former Liberal Treasurer William McMahon denounces a 1972 style ad urging him to be Treasurer. He names P Sayers of Erskineville as the ad author and says Sayers, once active against the coalition, is now aligned with Labor. McMahon calls it a futile, old ploy.
President Sadat told Israeli MPs in Jerusalem that the 1973 Yom Kippur War should be the last war. He called for security measures for Israel including demilitarised zones and UN forces while urging hard decisions for both sides to end distrust and maintain dialogue. Begin noted Sadat’s approval of his Cairo visit but said it would be postponed for now.

Six Vietnamese refugee boats docked in Darwin yesterday swamping quarantine facilities. 221 refugees on board set a new single arrival record, bringing Australia’s boat people total to 10 651. Two boats with 74 refugees tied up beside a wharf before authorities noticed them. Four more boats were to be escorted to Darwin from a nearby inlet as intelligence suggests up to 20 more could be en route from Thailand and Malaysia. Authorities condemn surveillance gaps and demand stronger northern coast monitoring.
Prime Minister Fraser opened a campaign with $270 million in promises including tax and duty reforms, education and employment programs, stronger welfare measures, and export incentives. He forecast unemployment drop from February, announced a new building society savings protection scheme, and ordered a third FFG-7 frigate.
