Indian leader warns on war threat over China advances

Hall Show to Return to Hall Grounds in 1963

Quiet funeral in Canberra for Lady De L Isle

A private service for Lady De L Isle, wife of the Governor General, was held at St John’s Anglican Church. Her death followed a long illness. the casket departed via Fairbairn for a service aircraft to Britain, with the family vault to receive the body at Penhurst. The ceremony was attended by top officials, the Anglicans clergy, and a crowd outside the church.

Duke Arrives by Air to-Day in Canberra Tour

The Duke will arrive at Fairbairn at 8.50 am and depart for Perth at 8.30 am tomorrow. He plans official duties in Canberra including a noon visit to the Academy of Science and a Royal Fellowship, a 5.30 pm reception, and a 7.45 pm dinner at the Prime Minister’s Lodge. He stays at Canberra House and is met by the Governor-General and Prime Minister. The guard and band will greet him, with ceremonies at RAAF air base and at Rawage, before a Canberra House departure at 11.45 am for the Academy of Science. The academy will confer four Royal Fellowships. return to Canberra House by 12.45 pm, then depart for the air port at 8.10 am tomorrow. The Duke travels to Perth to open the Commonwealth Games and plans a February return with the Queen.

Tighter Control of Fireworks Planned

The advisory council recommends stricter control of fireworks. The minister noted NSW and Victoria along with the Department of Customs are considering tighter import and sale controls. Because most fireworks used in Canberra shows are imported from the states, any federal moves would align with state legislation. Coordination with the states is planned and Canberra will be informed of suitable provisions.

Remembrance Day Observed At Berlin Wall Memorial

West Berlin and West Germany observed Remembrance Day for 48 refugees killed attempting to flee to the West when the Berlin Wall went up in 1961. East German border guards watched as hundreds of West Berliners walked along the wall waving to those in the East.
