In Brisbane a record balloon ascent climbed 30 miles above Longreach for a purely scientific experiment. A 600 lb gamma ray telescope payload parachuted down near 50 miles west of Longreach at 2 pm after the first of three balloon flights launched for Melbourne University and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, United States.

Race forfeited to give blood by Canberra yachtsman

Fire devastates London Art Gallery in Queanbeyan
A morning fire destroyed the interior of the London Art Gallery on Uriarra Road Queanbeyan with estimated damage of 8000 to 10000 dollars. Six of thirty paintings from Michael Brett’s exhibition Man and the Cosmos were saved, catalogued at over 5000 dollars. Brett, born 1931 in London, studied art there and has works in private collections. Canberra artists were also showing. Gallery operator Brian Kelly said only about 20 paintings were recovered and insurance would cover roughly 20 to 25 percent.
