Turkey on alert as Cyprus clashes kill Turkish Cypriots

ANKARA Turkey's armed forces were placed on alert after clashes between Greek and Turkish Cypriots left 23 Turkish Cypriots dead in a night battle around Kophinou and nearby Agios Theodoros. The Turkish cabinet met through the night and President Sunay returned to Ankara. Officials said Turkey may seek parliamentary approval to intervene if necessary. Airline bans were imposed on civilian and NATO traffic over Turkey. Domestic flights were grounded as the government prepared for possible troop deployment.

Collision damages two ships near Fremantle WA

The 15,496 ton BP Enterprise and the Al Kuwait were holed in a collision at Gage Roads four miles from Fremantle Harbour. The Al Kuwait is unseaworthy and towed to inner harbour for repairs while the BP Enterprise has a 40 foot gash, spilled oil, and a detergent spray operation is planned to curb pollution. Bombat offices found outside Northern Ireland government building

An explosive device was found this morning outside the Northern Ireland Government Offices in London with a brown paper parcel left near Ulster House on Berkeley Street. A security officer on patrol discovered it. officials say Princess Alexandra was not the intended target.
