A mine blast and a triple train crash in Japan killed at least 610 people, with 416 dead in the mine and 164 in the wreck, hundreds injured. About 500 miners were rescued after the explosion.
A Mitsui Mikawa coal mine explosion near Oniura City Kyushu and a derailment involving a Yokohama Tokyo bound passenger train caused a massive disaster. About 1944 miners were believed trapped as rescue efforts and gas poisoning claimed many lives, with authorities racing to recover bodies amid a devastated landscape and grieving families.
The superintendent of the St John Ambulance Brigade, Mrs Thelema Hollier, received a citation of special thanks from the Priory in Australia. The honour, presented at the Canberra divisions annual inspection, marks the first citation for a Canberra member. Hollier joined in 1938 and led the Canberra nursing division from 1980 to 194 when the division was defunded.

Francis James Murphy 24 of Mulwala formerly Heidelberg died after a car crash on Monaro Highways Way near Williamsdale. He suffered severe head injuries when his car hit a guide post and a bridge and died Sunday night at Canberra Community Hospital. Murphy starred in The Boyfriend at Albert Hall and was the production’s lead before the accident.
The Royal Australian Navy will get a 14,500 ton escort maintenance ship costing £5,300,000. Cockatoo Island Dockyard in Sydney begins preparations with keel laying planned for February and completion targeted in 1967. The vessel will boost self sufficiency and afloat support by serving as a mobile workshop to repair modern warships and weapon systems.
The French National Assembly approved a 1964 budget of 8,380 million pounds. More than a fifth of the total, 41,800 million, is allocated to defence, with 40 percent of that for France’s nuclear strike force.
