After a major fire destroyed the Civic Telephone Exchange on September 2, service to 500 subscribers was cut off. Portable exchanges were brought in from various areas and temporary numbers assigned to resume service.
The replacement exchange will be cut into service to sip with a recorded voice explaining that subscribers were connected to their original numbers. The fire damaged the exchange and restoration took 48 hours. by October 1 all subscribers were on temporary numbers. The emergency effort ran around the clock for seven weeks, with 2000 lines shown as restored.
PMG technicians and workmen complete the Braddon exchange setup following September 22 Civic Exchange fire. Tonight at 10 o clock the switch will occur and subscribers dial the old numbers three minutes later as Group Engineer Mr M Pardooley tests the new equipment.

A man and his wife were jailed after allegedly attempting to trade their youngest daughter for a state model used car. Police traced the claim through a Cayester and noted the family consisted of four children. The couple, Melly Dou, 19, and spouse, were kept in custody as investigators pursued the case against them.
