Sydney reporters say the Waterside Workers Federation plans to appeal the Tasmanian Supreme Court ruling in the Hursey case. General secretary J Healy stated solicitors would seek a stay of proceedings in Hobart, while ACTU emergency committee will meet in Melbourne to decide further union action. The Hurseys may be treated as non members of the W W F during the appeal, though the Australian Stevedoring Industry Authority believes they may work under the act. Sir Neville Gass, chairman of British Petroleum, urged continued exploration in Papua in a national broadcast, noting oil demand in the Free World could grow and that more evidence is needed from the Puri well to confirm commercial production.
