Moscow Radio accused the United States of failing to fulfill promises on Cuba while dismantling Russian weapons. It warned of renewed naval blockade and air surveillance, and alleged U.S. congressmen urged tougher pressure and attacked Fidel Castro.
United States spokesmen indicate on ground inspection of Soviet missile sites as part of any Cuba settlement. Talks at the United Nations report basic principles agreed. Castro rejects foreign inspection of Cuban bases. Anastas Mikoyan in Cuba seeks change. Red Cross may assist but only for ships leaving Cuba. on ground verification not planned. Reynolds Kennedy and Thant discuss roles. warnings about missiles and dismantling bases persist.
Police and residents reported a rusty, speckled grenade weighing about seven pounds found by a riverbank and pad dock near the Army drill hall in Childers Street. Three youths carried and kicked it for hours before handing it to the police. Royal Military College demolition experts later determined it a dud and removed it.
Saboteurs damaged two oil pipelines near Caracas about 26 miles east of the city, with the lines still turning on Saturday morning. Workmen shut the flow to prevent a fire after a sudden incident, according to the American Associated Press. Gulf Oil subsidiaries Mobil and Texas Oil owned the lines. A fire knocked out the water pumps supplying an electric station at the Nevers River, hampering refinery operations. The episode follows a week of attacks on Creole Petroleum Corp facilities in Lake Maracaibo, which halted about one sixth of Venezuela’s oil production.
Alan Laws of 24 Hutchins Street Yarralumla died when his car crashed on the Barlow Highway seven miles from Queanbeyan. A 16 year old passenger John Smith was critically ill at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. Other accidents near Queanbeyan left two men injured and in hospital. Fourteen people across NSW and Victoria died over the weekend with NSW toll rising.
Canberra Racing and Trotting Club opened the Lyneham course to an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 attendees. Traffic snarls formed outside the venue with about 2,000 cars, dust from windy conditions marred patrons, and limited parking plus basic amenities drew complaints. President D W Cargill noted water spraying to settle dusty areas and plans for bitumenisation next season.
Fifty heart research awards valued at £137,316 have been granted by the National Heart Foundation to medical and research workers. National president Mr. Warren Donald announced the awards yesterday. The fellowships will be tenable over the next one to three years as part of a second series of four fellowships by the Foundation.
